Stone to KG Chart: Stone and Pounds to KG Conversion Table (6 to 20 Stone)

A stone to kg chart shows your weight in stone and pounds down the side and along the top, with the matching kilograms in the middle. Find your stone, slide across to your pounds, and the box gives your weight in kg. For example, 10 stone 7 pounds is 66.7 kg.

What does the stone to kg chart from 6 to 20 stone show?

It shows the kilogram figure for every stone from 6 to 20, with columns for the extra pounds. All the numbers inside the table are kilograms.

How do you read a stone to kg chart?

Pick the row for your stone and the column for your spare pounds. The box where they meet is your weight in kilograms.

Someone who weighs 12 stone 4 pounds would go to the “12 st” row, move across to the “+4 lb” column and read 78.0 kg. A person at exactly 15 stone would use the first column, “+0 lb”, and read 95.3 kg.

The “+7 lb” column is the half-stone column. People often say “ten and a half stone” or “thirteen and a half stone”, and this column gives those weights without any extra working. Ten and a half stone is 66.7 kg and thirteen and a half is 85.7 kg.

What if your pounds are an odd number?

Use the column just before your number and add 0.45 kg. One pound is 0.45 kg, so one extra pound always adds the same amount.

Take 9 stone 11 pounds. The chart has a column for 10 pounds, which gives 61.7 kg. Add 0.45 and you get 62.15 kg. The exact answer is 62.14 kg, so the method is accurate to the nearest hundred grams.

For 13 pounds, use the “+12 lb” column and add 0.45. Twelve stone 13 pounds is 81.6 plus 0.45, which makes 82.05 kg. The exact figure is 82.1 kg.

Can you use the chart backwards, from kg to stone?

Yes. Look through the boxes for the figure closest to your weight in kilograms, then read the row and column it sits in.

Say your scales show 84 kg. The nearest box is 84.4, which sits in the 13 st row under the “+4 lb” column. Your weight is a little under 13 stone 4, so call it 13 stone 3. The exact answer is 13 stone 3.2 pounds.

This works well for a quick check. If you start from kilograms often, the kg to stone chart is easier, because it lists every kilogram in order.

What do the units on the chart mean?

A stone is 14 pounds, a pound is 16 ounces, and a kilogram is 1,000 grams. Stone and pounds belong to the imperial system. Kilograms belong to the metric system, which most of the world uses.

On the chart, “st” is short for stone and “lb” is short for pound. The plus sign in the column headings means “stone plus this many pounds”. So the “+10 lb” column on the 11 st row is 11 stone 10 pounds.

What about weights below 6 stone or above 20 stone?

For weights outside the main table, use the figures below and add 0.45 kg for each spare pound.

Our stone to kg converter covers any weight, including pounds and ounces.

How can you work out a change in weight using the chart?

Read both weights from the chart and take one away from the other. The difference is your loss or gain in kilograms.

Suppose you started at 14 stone 2 and now weigh 13 stone 6. The chart gives 89.8 kg and 85.3 kg. Take the second from the first and you have lost 4.5 kg.

There is a shortcut if you already know the change in pounds. Multiply the pounds by 0.45. Ten pounds is 4.5 kg, which matches the answer above. A full stone lost is 6.35 kg and half a stone is 3.18 kg.

This is helpful when your slimming group counts in pounds and your GP or practice nurse asks how many kilograms you have lost.

Why do the kilograms have only one decimal place?

One decimal place matches what most bathroom scales can show. Digital home scales usually display steps of 0.1 kg, and extra digits would suggest more accuracy than the scales can give.

Home scales also differ from each other. Step on two sets in the same minute and the readings may be a few hundred grams apart. Floors matter too, since a soft carpet can change the result. For tracking your own weight over time, the best habit is to use one set of scales, in one spot, at the same time of day.

If you need two decimal places for a form, the converter gives them.

When do you need your weight in kg if you think in stone?

You need kilograms whenever a form, a machine or a product label uses metric units, which in the UK is most of the time.

Everyday examples include:

  • Health forms. Hospital pre-assessment forms and GP registration forms ask for weight in kilograms.
  • Gym machines. Treadmills, rowing machines and exercise bikes ask for your weight in kg to estimate calories burned.
  • Product weight limits. Ladders, office chairs, bikes, trampolines and loft ladders list a maximum user weight in kilograms.
  • Activities. Horse riding centres, zip wires and skydiving centres set weight limits, and many state them in kg.
  • Travel. Light aircraft and helicopter tours often ask each passenger for a weight in kilograms.

A product with a limit of 100 kg will carry someone up to 15 stone 10 pounds. A limit of 120 kg is 18 stone 12 pounds, and 150 kg is 23 stone 8 pounds. Check the label before you buy if you are near a limit.

How are the numbers in the chart worked out?

Each box uses one sum: stone times 14, plus the spare pounds, times 0.453592.

Take the box for 16 stone 8 pounds. Sixteen times 14 is 224. Add 8 and you have 232 pounds. Multiply 232 by 0.453592 and the answer is 105.2 kg, the same as the chart.

The figure 0.453592 is the weight of one pound in kilograms. It has been the agreed value in Britain, the United States and other countries since 1959, so a pound weighs the same wherever you are.

How can you print or save the chart?

A printable A4 PDF version of this chart will be available here soon. You can also print the page from your browser in landscape layout so all nine columns fit.

Some simple ways to keep it close:

  • Tape a copy inside the bathroom cupboard.
  • Save a screenshot to the favourites album on your phone.
  • Keep one in a gym bag or a slimming group folder.
  • Highlight your own row so you can find it at a glance.

Can you use this chart for babies and children?

The sums are the same, but this chart starts at 6 stone, which is too heavy for young children. Babies are also weighed in pounds and ounces, not stone.

For a child, use the converter and enter the weight in stone and pounds or in pounds only. A child who weighs 4 stone 6 pounds is 28.1 kg. For a newborn, a weight of 7 pounds 8 ounces is 3.4 kg.

Remember that healthy weight for children depends on age, height and sex. A conversion chart changes the unit and says nothing about whether a weight is healthy.
