How do you convert kg to stone and pounds by hand?

You need two steps: one division and one multiplication. A phone calculator is enough.

  1. Divide your weight in kilograms by 6.35029.
  2. Write down the whole number. That is your stone.
  3. Take the part after the decimal point and multiply it by 14.
  4. The answer is your pounds. Round it to one decimal place.

Here is a worked example with 68 kg:

  • 68 ÷ 6.35029 = 10.708
  • The whole number is 10, so that is 10 stone.
  • 0.708 × 14 = 9.9
  • 68 kg is 10 stone 9.9 pounds, which most people would call 10 stone 10.

The number 6.35029 comes from the size of a stone. One stone is 14 pounds, and one pound is fixed by law at 0.45359237 kilograms. Multiply those two together and you get 6.35029 kg in a stone.

What is the formula for kg to stone?

The formula is: stone = kilograms ÷ 6.35029. You can also write it as stone = kilograms × 0.157473. Both give the same answer.

This gives you stone as a decimal, such as 11.81 stone. That figure is correct, but it is not how people say their weight out loud. Nobody in Britain says “I weigh eleven point eight one stone”. They say “eleven stone eleven”. That is why the second step, turning the decimal into pounds, matters so much.

Is 11.5 stone the same as 11 stone 5 pounds?

No. 11.5 stone is 11 stone 7 pounds, because half a stone is 7 pounds, not 5. This is the most common slip people make.

A stone has 14 pounds in it, not 10. So the number after the decimal point is a share of 14. Here is how the decimals line up:

Decimal partPounds
0.11.4 lb
0.253.5 lb
0.57 lb
0.7510.5 lb
0.912.6 lb

If a website or a set of scales shows your weight as 12.3 stone, that means 12 stone 4.2 pounds. It does not mean 12 stone 3.

How many stone is 1 kg?

One kilogram is 0.157 stone, which is about 2.2 pounds. It takes a little over six kilograms to make one full stone.

These small amounts are useful when you are tracking weight loss or gain:

2 kg0 st 4.4 lb4.4 lb
3 kg0 st 6.6 lb6.6 lb
5 kg0 st 11 lb11 lb

So if you have lost 5 kg, you are 11 pounds lighter. That is a little over three quarters of a stone.

How do you go from kg to lbs to stone?

Multiply the kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds, then divide the pounds by 14 to get stone. Some people find this route easier because each step uses a number they already know.

Take 90 kg as an example:

  • 90 × 2.20462 = 198.4 pounds
  • 198.4 ÷ 14 = 14 with 2.4 left over
  • 90 kg is 14 stone 2.4 pounds

This is another way to get from kg to stone and pounds, and it is helpful if your scales or your gym show weight in pounds. You can stop after the first step for a pounds-only answer, or carry on for stone.

Can you convert kg to stone in your head?

Yes. Divide the kilograms by 6, then take away a twentieth of your answer. It gets you within a pound or two.

Try it with 76 kg. Divide by 6 and you get about 12.7. A twentieth of 12.7 is roughly 0.6. Take that away and you have 12.1 stone. The exact answer is 11.97 stone, or 11 stone 13.6 pounds, so the shortcut is close enough for a chat with a friend.

A second trick is to remember a few fixed points:

  • 50 kg is just under 8 stone
  • 63.5 kg is 10 stone exactly
  • 76 kg is about 12 stone
  • 89 kg is about 14 stone
  • 100 kg is 15 and three quarter stone

From any of these, add or take away 1 pound for each 0.45 kg. Neither trick should be used for medical forms. Use the converter or the full sum for those.

Why do people in the UK still weigh themselves in stone?

People in the UK and Ireland use stone out of habit, even though shops, schools and hospitals moved to metric units years ago. It is how parents and grandparents talked about weight, and it stuck.

The stone has been used in Britain for hundreds of years. It was once a trade measure for wool and other goods, and its size changed from town to town until it was fixed at 14 pounds. It has not been a legal unit for selling goods since the 1980s, but nobody needs permission to use it for their own body weight.

The result is a country that uses two systems at once. Your GP writes your weight in kilograms. Your bathroom scales may show both. Your slimming group may talk in stone and pounds. And a friend in the United States will only use pounds, because stone is almost unknown there. Being able to move between kilograms, stone and pounds saves a lot of confusion. Our NHS weight guide explains how those clinic readings translate into stone and pounds.

How exact does the answer need to be?

For everyday use, one decimal place on the pounds is plenty. Your weight moves by a kilogram or more across a normal day, so extra decimal places tell you nothing useful.

Body weight goes up after meals and drinks and comes down overnight. A reading of 12 stone 8.4 pounds in the morning could be 12 stone 10 by the evening. Rounding to the nearest pound, or even the nearest half pound, is fine for tracking progress.

There are two cases where you should keep the full figure:

  • Medical doses and forms. Some medicines are worked out from body weight in kilograms. Give the kilogram figure from the scales and do not convert back and forth.
  • Sport weigh-ins. Boxing, rowing and horse racing all have strict limits. A few ounces can matter, so use the exact numbers.
